Violence Flares in North CaucasusIngushetia insurgents, with the help of the Caucasus Emirate, have increased the violence in the Russian-controlled Caucasus. After a failed assassination attempt on President Murat Zyazikov, Russian forces have increased troop deployment to the region. This operation has resulted in many deaths and hundreds of arrests. Militants have vowed to break Russia’s control on the region. CHARLEY DAKROTT VICTIM OF HEART ATTACKCEO of Dakrott dead from a stress-related heart attack.About midnight last night, the wife of Charley Dakrott, CEO of Dakrott Automobile Manufacturing Company, realized her husband was dead. Charley Dakrott was the last of the old school of whispering CEOs. He abhorred the direction government was forcing auto manufacturers, and for years, had been one of the behind-the-scenes directors of the Automobile Lobbying Association. He was a believer in the principle that consumers should have an automobile that they can afford and that the government should get out of the way of that pursuit. His company was running well, but some suggest major strife inside the company, as major players continued to eat away at his market share. Doctors suggest that the stress of running a car company may have caused the heart attack that killed him. (Continued on Fifth Page.) |
Letter to Editor: Worthwhile CauseThere's a worthwhile cause at the Boro Park, to which I know you'll want to contribute when you hear the facts. Hatfield was telling me that the Slumville Boy's Club baseball team needs about $200. They did well last year, nearly winning the championship, and they need money for balls, bats, and umpires. Mr. Hatfield is the athletic director of the outfit. Do give them a little financial backing because they need it and deserve it. |

Mr. Hill was driving home from the city when he noticed the girl in the car. He took the girl to the St. Ouchy Hospital, where it was found that her skull was fractured. Lieutenant Noll of the 177th Street Station visited the hospital and talked to the young woman. She said she had been separated from her husband, Harry McCormick, a private chauffeur, for some time and had been living with her mother and earning her own living. Her husband intercepted her on her way to work this morning, she said. And he invited her to ride downtown with him. McCormick became angry when she refused to listen to his plea to take him back, and he threatened her. She lost consciousness during the quarrel and did not know how her head was hurt. In the tonneau of the car, the police found a blood-stained crank handle. The cushions and floor were disarranged as though by a violent struggle. A warrant has been issued for Mr. McCormick's arrest. |
